Internationalism Course Project Rationale
THESIS: The international community should strive towards freeing trade in order to minimize socioeconomic inequalities across the globe, which would be resultant of the fairer distribution of wealth and skills across the global population brought about by closer economic cooperation and interdependence.
Yes, I have addressed my thesis in this project. My approach is detailed as follows:
- First of all, I proposed a general theory as to why freeing trade would reduce socioeconomic disparities across the world. I explored (i) the incentives for nations to trade with one another and the system of mutual trade; (ii) how freeing trade facilitates the cross-border expansion of transnational commercial entities; and (iii) why and how transnational companies could catalyze/ accelerate trends towards socioeconomic revitalization, particularly in the context of developing countries.
- Secondly, I explored the possible barriers to free trade. I directly criticized the Brexit vote and Donald J. Trump's protectionist inclinations as myopic, and highlighted the inefficiency of tariffs. I also gave background into the criticality of internationalism, by discussing how it has been used historically to free trade and that it could have been used to circumvent the Brexit situtation. I also used this opportunity to discuss the net benefits of NAFTA and the EU - two specific examples of free trade that have been brought about by internationalism.
- Thirdly, I explored two specific cases where outsourcing has been used to revitalize the economic circumstances of developing countries around the world. Specifically, these were the effects of transnational businesses on the information technologies (IT) sectors of India and the Philippines, and their net effects on socioeconomic disparity.
